Approximately 4 million people in the UK use ADSL with an extra 2 million using a cable connection, meaning 6 million people in the UK have an always-on internet connection. Of these over 1.7 million are subscribed to BT?s broadband package, making them the UK?s main broadband provider.

Back in August 2000 BT first launched its high-speed internet connection to customers. Initially only available to around one third of UK households and costing ?500 a year it was the first step in many to Broadband Britain.

There are currently only 2 ways to connect to ADSL in the UK. Recently a technique called Local Loop Unbundling means you don?t need to have a BT phone line, but at the moment only 1% of people on broadband in the UK use this method. The only other way to connect transforms an existing BT phone line into a high-speed digital line. This is only available with a BT phone line though, so even if you don?t subscribe to BT?s package your ISP still has to pay BT money to maintain and connect your line. Because of this BT has been able to dictate the availability of broadband in the UK for a few years now.

For fear that UK telecoms watchdog Ofcom would break-up the company because they held a monopoly by owning all the phone lines and means to connect to broadband, BT has agreed to offer rival companies access to the ?Local Loop?, which is the network of telephone lines around the country. By doing this BT could stand to lose many customers as other companies can offer their broadband directly and without having to pay BT expenses.

Since the introduction of ADSL in the UK many potential customers found their local exchanges were simply out of date and the lines too old to be able to handle this new technology. Campaigns run country-wide as BT will only upgrade exchanges if there is adequate interest. ADSL is still not available in many villages and more rural areas of Britain but BT is vastly expanding and upgrading its network to try and cover all the country, Broadband is currently available in more than 96.6% of all UK households.

BT?s standard package is 2Mbps with a 1 GB monthly download limit. This means you can only download 1 GB?s worth of content, be it WebPages, music or movies, a month. This is more than enough for typical WebPages, but excessive music downloads will result in your account being suspended or limited for the rest of the month. You can upgrade your broadband to a 15 GB monthly limit for a little extra a month. BT also offers Pay As You Go dialup and unlimited dialup contracts.

BT Broadband also offers a variety of packages and upgrades designed to suit every user. You can upgrade to a gaming account to play xbox and PS2 games online, you can setup parental filters for your children, and there?s protection against spam, junk mail, pop-ups, virus?s and online intruders.

One of the main reasons people will continue to signup to BT is its reliability. They have broken the mould of all ISPs having poor customer service and are incredibly helpful with setting up your connection.

BT are aiming to trail their 8Mbps connection soon, intending it to be in common use by the end of the year. BT?s ultimate goal is making broadband available throughout the country, including rural areas.

I suppose the only downside to a laptop compared to a desktop is that if you are really into gaming it maybe doesn?t quite cut the mustard like the laptop, Laptops usually share memory between the CPU(central processing unit) and the GPU(graphics processing unit), saving a lot of space and helping reduce power consumption.

The older we get the more we hate change. The thought of leaving something familiar through repetition to start over again can be intimidating. There is safety in routine. Still, no one is locked into a relationship or a job. Free will dictates that your life is yours to live. You can walk away from either situation if it isn?t working anymore, or better still drive away and watch it disappear in your rear view mirror.

Why is throwing in the towel so painfully resisted by human nature? Are we too embarrassed to admit another mistake? Are past screw-ups mounting? Is it easier to put off quitting until we?re fired? In my working career I only got the boot once. But he did it with such gentleness that no blood was left on the carpet. He was wise enough to see my lack of enthusiasm; my readiness to fly. I thanked him as we parted.

Not all ideas are good ones. I-changed-my-mind is perfectly acceptable. Use it for heavens sake! Humans are natural learning machines. It?s inevitable that we turn down dead-end roads. In time you begin to recognize the outcome before it even happens.

The next printer you?ll want on your desk is a color laser printer. Forget those cheap outdated inkjet printers. They are cheap for one reason, to get you to buy ink. I?m not making that up. It came right from an executive of a leading inkjet printer manufacturer.

Do you have a black and white laser printer? These gems are the best for the home office. Cheap, guilt free printing with high quality usually reserved for a large office. The price is right on the home models. You can almost buy one for the cost of a black and a color ink cartridge.

But let?s talk about color laser jet printers. A color laser jet works just like a black printer except it has 4 toner cartridges. Each one has its own life. The base printers I was looking at had a recommended monthly volume of up to 30,000 pages. Don?t think I?ll have that much.

Photo printing is a must these days and you want to print your pictures without the fear of using up all the ink. Digital cameras are everywhere, but getting the pictures printed in photo quality seems to be the biggest drawback to the cameras. Enter the color laserjet printer.

Speed is a big factor in printing. At home, I?m usually not in a big hurry, so I?ll spend less and wait. I?ll send stuff to the printer and check it later when it?s done. You can save a bunch if you don? t need speed. The HP2600n is my pick for a home color laser printer. The Hewlett Packard was also selected as ?PC Magazine Editor?s Choice? award.

Let me give you the scoop. First, price. Don?t be afraid. $400. Yes, that?s all for a color laser jet. Speed? 8 pages per minute. 16 meg of RAM, but the 2600n is network ready for the small or home office.

For comparison, I looked at the 2500L. This HP model was faster at 20 ppm black but only 4 ppm in color. It did have more memory ? 64MB as compared to 16MB, but it was not network ready. Price? Same.

The one thing that tipped me over the edge to the 2600n was that all 4 toner cartridges were right in the front. I personally examined this unit today and the quality is dead on with Hewlett Packard?s reputation in the printing industry.

The price and quality are hard to beat.

The cost of setting up a web site is dirt cheap nowadays. You can register a domain for less than $2.00 as I write this (for .info domains). Hosting is also very cheap, and getting cheaper all the time.

So why are so many web sites springing up? Obviously somebody's making money besides the hosting companies, so here's some idea starters for you:

1. Sell your own products or services. They should be related to your target audience. You want to be able to take credit cards (at least with PayPal if not otherwise) on your site and deliver your product to your customers as fast as possible.

2. Sell another company's products. There is no shortage of companies willing to drop ship items for you, all you have to do is make the sale and place the order with your fulfillment company, they do all the work, and you profit on the difference between their price and yours. There are ways to avoid the hassles some attribute to drop shippers.

3. If you have enough activity to your site, you can sell advertising space, such as banner, classified, or text ads. Of course you need to have enough traffic coming to your site first, so that people have an incentive to want to gain exposure to your visitors. You might not make a lot from displaying small text or banner ads, but it can easily pay for your hosting fees, and enough more to invest in some software scripts that will make your site that much better.

4. Sign up with Google AdSense or another contextual advertising company, and let them place their ads on your pages. When someone clicks on an ad, you earn money. Some webmasters are making many thousands of dollars a month with Google AdSense.

5. If you have enough web space, you could rent other people web pages. You could also give them away for free and make money by including your Google AdSense ads on their web pages.

6. Charge people a fee (monthly or annual subscription, or a one time fee) to access your web site. People will pay you money for your content if it's valuable to them. This can be ebooks, reports, interviews, software, etc.

If you find a niche market, you can spend some time researching your topic and put all sorts of articles and resources to that niche on your site. Then those who have a similar interest might be likely to want to take advantage of all the time you've already spent by coming straight to the site (yours) that has all the answers for them already. If you have enough articles on your topic, you might want to get a site search engine (there are free scripts available) to make it easier to find the information your visitors want.

7. Make money selling other people's products through affiliate programs. They'll give you a link to track your sales. If you haven't heard of affiliate programs, you're in for a treat, many thousands of people are making a full time income just by driving traffic from their site to merchant sites, never touching or shipping a product, letting the merchant do all the work and make the entire investment in inventory.

A good way to start with affiliate programs is to sign up with ClickBank. There are well over 10,000 different eBooks that you are then automatically an affiliate for. It's likely that there are some that tie in with the theme of your site. Write up some reviews and recommendations and send traffic to the ClickBank merchant, and if the eBook sells, you get commissions sometimes as high as 75%.

Another benefit is that if you make a page for each of your eBook reviews, you will eventually start drawing traffic from search engines because some of your pages will get ranked well for the keywords used to describe the eBook you're reviewing.

8. Publish an e-zine from your web site. Ask your visitors to subscribe to the e-zine right from your web site through a sign up box. You might want to find something to entice them to give you their email address, like a free report, eCourse, or eBook. Once you have enough subscribers to your e-zine, you could sell classified or sponsor advertising inside your e-zine, or you could periodically review and recommend products that you're an affiliate for to your subscribers.

9. If you have your own business already (real estate agent, hairdresser, contractor, restaurant, etc.), put up a web page to draw in prospects. All you need is a picture, contact information, a description of what you do, and you have a cheap advertisement that will pull in customers.

10. Set up a local directory of small businesses. Give each business their own page, fix it up for them so that it's optimized for the search engines, and charge them annually for the service. They won't have to pay hosting fees and you do everything for them. Suggest that they put the web site address on their business card, and you'll have virtually locked them in for annual renewals for the life of their business.

These are just some thought-starters for you. There are over a billion web sites on the Internet, there are obviously more than ten ways to earn money with them.
